FTV Library Survey

In response to the suggestions collected through the FTV Library Survey conducted by Student Association of the School of Film and Television in May 2009, the opening hours of the FTV Library was revised for the 1st semester of 2009/2010.  The Library conducted another survey in November 2009 to follow up suggestions made in the May Survey.  97 questionnaires were sent out and 79 replies were received : a response rate of 81%.

Key Findings:
1.  Over 80% of the respondents visited the Library at least twice a week.  Most of them came to browse and borrow AV materials.
2. Most users visited the FTV Library between 1:00 – 2:00 pm and 6:00 – 7:00 pm.
3. Over 50% of the respondents felt that the Chinese book and AV collections were not sufficient.
4. 20% of the respondents never used the electronic resources.
5. 46%of respondents said that there were insufficient notebooks.

A sharing session was held on 18 December 2009, detailed analysis of the survey findings was presented to students and staff of the School of Film and Television.  At the request of the School, the Thursday opening hours have been amended and can be found at:

Measures Taken:
To solve the problem of insufficient space for a larger collection, some shelving space has been created by moving the old newspapers to the student canteen at the Bethanie campus.  Workshops will be organized for staff and students in the near future for them to become familiarized with using e-resources.  In response to point 5 of the key findings, an extra netbook has already been made available for loan in the FTV Library.

Library Survey

A library survey was conducted early this year. 1,200 surveys were sent out and we received 219 replies: a response rate of 18%. 42% of the respondents reported that they visited the Library more than 2 to 3 times a week, while 27% visited the Library once a week and 15% came every day. The major reasons for coming to the Library were to borrow and return library materials and to use the AV facilities.

The overall level of satisfaction with the Library was positive (74%). Most of the respondents were satisfied with our services and facilities including computing equipment, Learning Resources Room, photocopiers and Seminar Room. With respect to the library collections, most respondents were satisfied with our library collection including books, newspapers, AV materials, electronic resources and periodicals.

From the survey, most users agreed that it was easy to use the library catalogue and to locate items on shelves. Of course some commented on areas that we could improve on, for example opening hours of non-teaching period and loan period of AV materials. We would provide more details in the near future and hopefully measures for improvement.

We wish to thank all who have partaken in this survey.
