Welcome back

On behalf of all the Library staff, we would like to extend our warmest welcome to all new and returning staff and students.

If you are new to the Academy, you‘ll need to familiarize yourself with the services we offer to you.  You can attend one of the orientation programmes, pick up a copy of the Library Handbook (in English & in Chinese) or you can find information about the libraries on our homepage:  http://library.hkapa.edu

Feel free to ask.  We are here to help and get you started.

Greeting from the Librarian

I had the opportunity to meet with staff and students of the School of Film and Television earlier in December, sharing survey findings of the services and facilities of the FTV Library.  I am happy that the students are concerned about the Library and they use it frequently.

My New Year resolution is “getting to know you” (a song from “The King and I”) better and planning services that suit your needs.  If you have any suggestion about the Libraries and the services we offer, please let me know.  I am all ears.

I wish you all a prosperous new year and may all your dreams come true.

Xin Nian Kuai Le (新年快樂)

2007 seems to have flown by and 2008 has sneaked in quietly. Now that the holiday is over, you may be busy getting ready to celebrate the Year of the Rat. The Library wishes you a meaningful and resourceful year.

In 2008, we will bring you more useful resources in print and electronic and hope that you will enjoy visiting our learning space and using our resources (both physical and electronic). We hope in the years to come, the Library will be a companion to you in your journey of knowledge discovery.

Welcome back to a new academic year

Welcome back to a new academic year. While you were away, we have kept ourselves busy, improving our collection and facilities for you.

The Library has occupied more or less the same space since the Wanchai Campus opened in 1985. Our physical collection on the other hand has increased five folds (from 25,000 items in 1987 to 120,000 items in 2007). In the past years, we have built more shelves for more items. Since 2001, the Library has begun subscribing to electronic resources and the number of e-titles has increased from 2400 to 8900 at present. With the gaining popularity of electronic resources, the Library has shifted the focus from buying physical items to acquiring electronic resources in the hope of extending information services beyond the physical boundary of our small and compact library.

Last year you have seen the introduction of this newsletter which is circulated primarily by email and we have been alerting you about new electronic resources that the Library has subscribed to. To our delight, our system registered an usage statistics of almost 1.9 million between July 2006 and June 2007.

Greeting from the Librarian

2007 is fast approaching, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and healthy new year!

Last year, we have extended the opening hours of the Learning Resources Room, increased the loan quotas, installed network printing for all workstations, replaced and added new computers in the Library and the Learning Resources Room, and created a Librarian’s Recommendation Corner. To help us make improvements that are relevant to your needs, please participate in the Library Survey which will be circulated to you shortly.

The Library is an integral part of the Academy so your continuous support means a lot to all of us working in the Library. We value your comments and feedback, and hope to see you using the Library in 2007!
